Today Cancer has become the second most leading cause of death throughout the world. It is a disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue.
What is Cancer
Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body.
- Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells.
- Cancerous tumors spread into, or invade, nearby tissues and can travel to distant places in the body to form new tumors (a process called metastasis).
- They may also be called malignant tumors.
- Many cancers form solid tumors, but cancers of the blood, such as leukemias, generally do not.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BENIGN AND MALIGNANT

BENIGN
CHARACTERISTICS
MALIGNANT

Well Differentiated; structure sometimes typical of tissue of origin
Differentiation / Anaplasia
Some lack of differentiation with anaplasia; structure often atypical

Usually progressive and slow; may come to a standstill or regress; mitotic figures rare and normal
Rate of growth
Erratic and may be slow to rapid; mitotic figures may be numerous and abnormal

Usually cohesive, expansile, well-demarcated masses that do not invade or infiltrate surrounding normal tissues
Local invasion
Locally invasive, infiltrating surrounding tissue; sometimes may be seemingly cohesive and expansile

Absent
Metastasis
Frequently present; the larger and more undifferentiated the primary, the more likely are metastases.
EPIDEMIOLOGY
- There were 18.1 million new cases of cancer worldwide in 2020, it is estimated.
- The four most common cancers occurring worldwide are female breast, lung, bowel and prostate cancers. These four account for more than four in ten of all cancers diagnosed worldwide.
- Worldwide there will be 28 million new cases of cancer each year by 2040.

The estimated number of incident cases of cancer in India for the year 2022 was found to be 14,61,427 (crude rate:100.4 per 100,000).
In India, one in nine people are likely to develop cancer in his/her lifetime.
Lung and breast cancers were the leading sites of cancer in males and females, respectively.
